Organic/Bio There’s something wild going on in Stephen Hagen’s Willamette Valley vineyard, and the 2023 Juel Pinot Noir is a great way to get a taste of what grazing based viticulture delivers. Stephen replaces herbicides, mowing, plowing and fertilizers with something more alive: a rotating cast of sheep, geese and pigs to crop the between-rows grass, gently turn over the soil, and give the soil and vines the energy they need to do something very special.
Juel tells the story of this wild vineyard in overview, combining fruit picked from all four corners of the site on a single day of harvest with some later-picked fruit and a just right jolt of whole cluster spice and modest sheen of new French oak. The vines here give a breathtaking blend of richness and freshness, with super-deep red/black Pinot Fruit and a lovely dose of earth and spice. It’s perfect for the wild range of flavors on your holiday table and will just get better and better with more time in cellar.
For You If: You enjoy more body and texture on your Pinot than often found in the Willamette Valley – Stephen Hagen’s grazing based farming approach gives Pinot that really fills your mouth with fleshy richness while still delivering solid dose of refreshing acidity.
Not For You If: You’re after innocuous or thin Pinot – this is intensely flavored and uncommonly rich and deep.
