Organic/Bio Lower ABV Ben Casteel's top Estate Chardonnay was a stunner on release in 2020 and is even better with four years in bottle. This is rich and creamy enough for California Chardonnay fans, mineral and vibrant enough for Burgundy lovers, and distinctly Willamette Valley in how it puts it all together. The oak shapes and spices the wine without getting in the way of the rich fruit and crisp, buttery, green apple, finish. You can wait even longer if you like, but I'm drinking it now!
For You If: You like New World Chardonnay with richness and freshness, body and drinkability, spice/butter and chalky minerality and, especially, a finish that just won't quit.
Not For You If: You're after austerity or reductive bite - this is poised and has excellent tension, but presents as rounded and inviting.
"The nose here is fresh and chalky with a fresh, flinty edge to the sliced pears, apple pastry and white peaches. The palate has a fresh attitude with good focus on entry and a build of lemons and grapefruit with peaches and pears, then apple pie to close. The pick of the crop each vintage at Bethel Heights."
"The winery offers a splendid slate of Chardonnays, all from estate-grown fruit. This reserve bears the owners' name, is barrel-fermented and shines with a rich mix of fruit, oak and butter. What propels all the mainstream flavors is the acidity, underscoring the apple, pear and peach fruit, and keeping the finish lively. A touch of minerality along with the pretty barrel toast makes the finish as luscious as the beginning."
