Giuseppe "Beppe" Caviola is one of the most important consulting oenologists in Italy, and his work at this, his own, personal, estate is exceptionally impressive. Twenty year-old vines and 400 meters elevation support low yields and a captivating blend of richness and freshness. A year in large oak casks gives spice, structure, and style. Dark cherry fruit really floods your palate with a hint of something floral and grainy, satisfying, tannins. Delicious stuff to match with pizza, pasta, roasted birds and even a nice, juicy, steak.
For You If: You love Piemonte Barbarea – this is a terrific example; you’re looking for a wine with enough black fruit to please a crowd and some seriously interesting texture for folks who want to pay attention; you’re after a delicious all-purpose Italian red.
Not For You If: You want a wine that’s really savory and doesn’t show a lot of juicy, palate-staining, fruit; you want grippy/firm structure – this is a little grainy, but not at all drying or gripping.
