Always one of our favorite Pinot Grigio’s has and even more compelling blend of depth, richness, vibrancy and cut in 2023. It’s grown by the 143 member/farmers of the Terlano cooperative winery (founded 1893!), each paying lots of attention to the average of just over 3 acres each they tend. The small plot size is essential every year given the alternative heat and cold and steep slopes of the Terlano valley in Italy’s Dolomite Mountains not far from Bolzano and on the road to Murano and the Alps further north. And, in 2023, it allowed Terlano to overcome challenging growing conditions to create a classic Pinot Grigio with even more purity, zest and flavor than norma.
It's jam-packed with crunchy Granny Smith apple, Bosc pear and early season nectarine fruit aromas and flavors. The mouthfeel is substantial and full, but somehow also light and transparent and wonderfully silky. Fresh lemon/lime acidity gives the finish just a touch of mouthwatering bite and minerally salt before things turn silky again and the tart fruit flavors fan out nicely. As Wine Advocate said of the 2021, “Done all in steel, the wine hits that intersection between crisp fruit and minimality. This is the secret of its massive drinking appeal. This versatile wine could pair with fish tacos, Thai salads, Mediterranean fish, and the list goes on.” Even more than usual, a terrific buy!
For You If: You already know that Alpine Pinot Grigio delivers the perfect balance of richness of feel and freshness of flavor – or you don’t know and want to discover for yourself; you’re looking for a classy house white to enjoy anytime and in any season with or without food.
Not For You If: You’re looking for the textural feel of a skin contact Pinot Grigio or the smoke/spice of a barrel-aged white; you want the sharp citrus of something like Sauvignon Blanc.
