Organic/Bio Wine Advocate (93 points) called this “great value” at $21 – it’s even better at this deal! It’s from the high, hot, plains of Jumilla in southern Spain where Monestrell (called Mourvedre in France) is the most common red grape, ripening to richness and good fruit in the hot, dry, conditions.  Winegrower José María has learned to crop his vines a little heavier than most to slow down alcohol accumulation and let Monestrell develop lots of rich fruit flavor.  And he adds 15% Garnacha to give more fruit and freshness. It’s a rollicking mouthful of tart and ripe raspberry and strawberry fruit with a just right touch of Mouvedre earthy, savory, complexity and a supple, easy, finish. Pretty much a perfect cookout or party red that drinks a bit like a fresher Cotes du Rhone or richer French bistro red – although at 14.5% there’s nothing “light” about the mouthfeel or flavor intensity.

For You If:    You enjoy Cotes du Rhone reds and are looking for some of those flavors in a more easy-drinking form; you like the tang and ripe fruit of Malbec or Cabernet Franc, but don’t want the herbal notes they often show; you’re after a heck of a deal!

Not For You If:   You want a wine that feels thick/heavy on your palate – this has size, but not that kind of density; you want to taste oaky flavors and spice; you’re after something with lots of drying grip – this is pretty smooth through the long, generous, finish.

"The perfumed, floral and elegant 2021 Monastrell has 15% Garnacha (the maximum allowed if the wine is called Monastrell), as it's from a year that had more Garnacha vines, and he keeps planting the variety in the property because it gives the blend more elegance and freshness. The Monastrell matured in used barrels for eight to nine months, and the Garnacha matured in concrete. It's juicy and tasty, with fine-grained tannins and 14.5% alcohol but with great balance. It's Mediterranean with elegance. Great value."
