Organic/Bio Lower ABV There is Provençal rosé and then there is Palette. Even back in 1948, the limestone soils in a small enclave just south of Aix-en-Provence were clearly different from the rest of the region, resulting in the formation of one of France’s oldest and (at around 100 acres) smallest AOCs. The soils here give rosé more minerality and power than in most of Provence without any loss of freshness and elegance. Which is why the largest winery in the AOC, Ch Simone, commands $70+ prices for its Palette pink and this normally sells for nearly $40.
Henri Bonnaud is one of four other producers in the AOC and makes an equally delicious – if less majestically priced – Palette. His wine is a saignée (bleeding off) of still pink wine from his bubbling red of Mourvedre, Grenache and Cinsault that finishes in tank and then ages in tank and 20% in oak cask. It’s deeply concentrated in flavor (if still light on its feet), with bold notes of blood orange, strawberry, Mandarin orange and lime. There’s excellent glide and fluidity on the palate before citrus juice and pith give shape to the lime and orange peel flavored finish. Terrific stuff.
For You If: You're looking for a more "high-end" Provencal pink experience - the terrior, farming and winemaking including oak aging gives this a bit more gravitas and complexity than you're expecting.
Not For You If: You're after a straight-ahead, fruit-focused, poolside-sipper - this is certainly delicious solo but delivers more complexity and concentration than most.
