From one of Rioja’s great historic estates, this blend of Tempranillo and 15% Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha aged 24 months in French and American oak is, as Wine Advocate says, “really very good, getting close to the complexity of a Gran Reserva but with the extra oomph of its youth.” Wine Enthusiasts 94 point tasting note adds, “Offers a bouquet of dark plum, black currant and aniseed. It is spicy at first sip, with flavors of clove, anisette, blackberry and cassis. Polished tannins make their presence known and then drift off into a cherry and violet finish.” A grand Rioja to drink or hold.
For You If: You enjoy the savory, savory, complexity of maturing Rioja matched by generous fruit and a beautifully fine-textured finish; you’re looking for a grand and impressive pairing for fancy meals featuring beef or lamb – this is just the ticket!
Not For You If: You’re looking for something smooth or fruity – the tannins are fine here and the fruit plenty present, but six years from the vintage and with 2 years in oak, this still has grip and the fruit is framed by plenty of maturing wine and oak spice.
