Darby English calls his 800 case production Purple Haze Cabernet Sauvignon blend a “cult wine” because it sells out so quickly every year. It’s a rich and deep blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Sirah and Merlot plus Grenache and Mourvedre (probably – he won’t say for sure!). Cab’s blackcurrant, blackberry, fig, and cured tobacco character is very much front and center. Certainly 16 months in very high-end French oak gave the wine a nice, smooth, sheen and added some spice. All in all, we’re a little “Hazy” about where the magic comes from, but we’re crystal clear on one thing: this is a terrific Cab in the Napa style for a very, very, low price.
Deep purple in the glass (what else would you expect?), where it serves up deep aromas of red currant, black raspberry and plum with accents of dark chocolate, smoke, spice and subtle herb. The big, bold, flavors showcase that lovely rich fruit with extra complexity from notes of sweet tobacco, black licorice, mocha, cedar and spice. It’s mouthfilling, for sure, but not heavy or thick, with firm but smooth tannins giving shape and length to the mocha, violet, and ripe fruit flavored finish. Enjoy right now as a terrific cookout/steak Cab blend and don’t be afraid to hold on to some for a while as it improves for 4-6 years.
For You If: You're looking for gushing black/purple fruit with a nice dollop of French oak for spice; you want a wine big enough for steaks and smooth enough to just sip.
Not For You If: You're looking for either a lot of power or super-shiny oak; you're after a more herbal, "sophisticated," style of Cab - this is pretty primary fun.
