This wine is terrific both as a genuinely delicious and impeccably balanced expression of New World Cabernet Franc and just as a compelling bottle of red wine. In general, Cabernet Franc is most interesting when it’s grown someplace that other Bordeaux varietals don’t like as much. If you plant Cab Franc in a place where you could have ripened Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or even Malbec to perfection, the Cab Franc seems to come out heavy, thick, syrupy and/or just not very delicious.
I don’t know enough about wine growing or Mendoza to say for sure, but I think the key to this wine is a tiny slice of the 130HA Diamandes vineyard in the Uco valley where the soil is broken rock on top and then a deep base of sand, silt and clay that drains water so fast that vines have to spend a lot of energy growing roots deep, deep, deep. Whatever is the source of magic, it gives a wine that has outstanding density but no feeling of heaviness at all. And a rich red currant and berry fruit that’s perfectly freshened by Cabernet Franc’s bright acids and whiff of crushed green herb. The wine fills your mouth and flows with breadth and energy through a long, savory, finish. A very big yum, here, in a wine you can use to dress up a holiday meal or just drink while enjoying the lights and flickering fire.
For You If: You like New World (aka, not from France) Cabernet Franc and want to try one that delivers uncommon texture without overdone fruit or oak; you don’t normally like New World Cabernet Franc and are open to being convinced that it can be delicious.
Not For You If: You’re after bell pepper flavors, hard-edged tannins, or something light – this is all the way ripe and feels lush and rich but, again, not at all heavy, cloying or sweet.
"A juicy and expressive cabernet franc showing a hint of roasted red peppers, allspice and sweet tobacco to the bright red berries and currants. Medium body with fine, polished, satin-like tannins. Very drinkable and poised."
