Organic/Bio Over the years, wine Robert Parker has called the Cotes du Rhone Champauvins "a baby Chateauneuf du Pape," "a poor person's Chateauneuf," and "a serious effort that could easily be mistaken for a Chateauneuf du Pape." All of which makes sense when you stand in the vineyard. To the south, across a three-meter path, are Grand Veneur’s Chateauneuf du Pape vines. And, to the east, the vines of Ch de Beaucastel. Why those vines are “in” and Champauvins “out,” nobody knows. But we do know it makes for a terrific wine and a heck of a bargain!
This year’s release delivers loads of rich, ripe, Rhonish fruit - kirsch, cherry, raspberry - along with classic accents of lavender, thyme, black pepper, and black olive and a firm, even cellar-worthy, tannic finish. Unlike most Chateauneuf, it's delicious right now but if you're looking for a bargain wine to cellar for 7-8 years, this does that, too. A stunning match with roast lamb, rich stews, burgers and anything with lots of rosemary, thyme and/or olives.
For You If: You love big reds that deliver loads of rich fruit flavor balanced by spice and herbal complexity; you’re after a bargain red to drink tonight and that will still improve with time; you like the flavors and textures of Chateauneuf du Pape, just not the price tag.
Not For You If: You’re looking for delicacy and finesse – this is a big, bold, red that stays focused and under control, but in a direct and powerful style.
“A velvety, poised and focused Cotes-du-Rhone with aromas of red berries, warm spices and a touch of bark. Full-bodied with round, ripe tannins. Creamy texture with a juicy and delicious core of bright berries funneling through to the lively finish with excellent length. From organically grown grapes.”
