Organic/Bio In January 2023, the 2020 edition of this wine was crowned “The World’s Best Gamay,” at the International Gamay Competition in Lyon, France. About a month later, I tasted the 2020 and this wine, the 2022, with Nicolas Boudeau in Paris. Flat out, the 2022 is better than “The World’s Best Gamay”! And it’s a perfect match for a big turkey dinner with all the fixin’s you can imagine.
Like vintage 2020, the 2022 season in Beaujolais was warm, dry, and small, giving highly concentrated wines of excellent richness without any loss of minerality or refreshment and, perhaps, one notch better structure and freshness. The Pierreux slice of Brouilly has especially loose and granite-rich soils, giving wines with all the plump fruit you’d expect in Brouilly plus a dollop of grip that suggests more prestigious (and expensive) Moulin-a-Vent. You’ll love the aromas of ripe black cherry and raspberry framed by a top note of dried flowers and a base note of sweet spice. The spice element (perhaps nutmeg?) runs from front to back across a palate that features plump red and black berry fruit and right on through the lightly grippy finish that ends with a squeeze of pomegranate juice lift. Starts silky, finishes firm, and delivers extreme delight from beginning to end. Terrific wine and great value.
