Organic/Bio Lower ABV The most exciting wine I tried from Richard this year, but small production and limited availability. Champ de Cour is a prestigious vineyard on a slope between Moulin a Vent’s iconic windmill and the Fleurie Cru. With a southern exposure and shelter from the wind. The blend of clay and granite forces the vines to dig deep and gives wines with a bit more body and more red-fruit perfume than elsewhere in Moulin a Vent. While Vinous is correct that there’s a Burgundian vibe here, it’s still definitely Beaujolais Gamay in character and minerality. Remarkably good now and for a decade or more.
For You If: You like a bit more refinement and structure in your Beaujolais and want to see how Gamay can head towards Burgundy-like character with age.
Not For You If: You’re looking for direct, fruit-filled, fun, Bojo – choose the Beaujolais Villages from Rottiers for that!
"I like the crushed stone minerality here on top of bramble berry fruit, licorice and savory herb aromas. Touch of cocoa. It’s broad, layered and flavorful, with a medium body and relatively firm, compact tannins. Long and delicious. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold."
"The 2022 Moulin-à-Vent Champ de Cour comes from vines planted in 50cm of clay over granite. Rottiers says this produces a more Pinot-like Beaujolais. It underwent whole-bunch vinification with a longer maceration. It has a very cohesive nose with precise red fruit and yes, blind, you might assert that it comes from Gevrey. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, very silky in texture and lightly spiced with a touch of pencil lead on the finish. Another great wine from Rottiers."
