Valensac is a thoroughly modern Languedoc winery focused on making rock-solid, all purpose, great value wines from varietals traditional (Grenache, Syrah) and more "modern" for the region (Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet, Merlot). Winegrower and estate manager Edwige Thuille does a great job with all of those and some more innovative grapes as well (Albarino, Petit Verdot). But what to do with the estate's oldest planting, thick-vined, gnarly, Alicante Bouchet planted decades ago to give loads of color to Languedoc table wine grown at very, very, high yields?
This - this is what you do with it! Edwige uses tight pruning and green harvest to bring Alicante's yields way down and then co-ferments it with younger-vine Grenache to amp up the fruit and create a platform for Alicante's more savory notes. Here it gives bold, dusky, aromas of black fruit, grilled herb and dark chocolate. The fleshy, round, smooth palate shows off ripe black cherry, summery mulberry and fresh Provencal herb before finishing with a jolt of black fruit and unexpected squid ink minerality. Soft enough to take a chill, bold enough to match up with big flavors from the grill, and smooth, seductive and delicious enough to pound down by the tumbler. What a treat for summer sipping!
For You If: You’re looking for a robust red for hearty food that stays light enough on it’s feet for solo sipping; the thought of “summery Bordeaux” appeals – this is a little like that.
Not For You If: You want the super-hearty and fleshy feel of most Rhone reds or the velvet texture of California Cabernet – this has plenty of size and texture but with a bit more poise and juiciness.
