Rich raspberry and blueberry fruit with a touch of spice from judicious use of whole clusters and just a wee bit of French oak (15% of the cuvee aged in 2nd use barrels; the rest in concrete and steel). With air, a bit of tapenade and garrigue (wild, sappy, herb) joins the party and the wine starts to feel fleshy, full and very generous. A triumph in a tough vintage (frost, clouds), conceding only a bit of concentration and a few years cellar potential to the very best years. And gaining from that a wonderful drinkability and immediacy. Big “yum” here.
Mordoree is unquestionably the finest winery on the Rhone’s “left bank,” across the river from Chateauneuf du Pape where sandy soils by the river run up gentle hills to stonier parcels of Lirac and Tavel. Christophe and Fabrice Delorme started the estate in 1985 to prove their native vines were worth the kind of attention Lirac got in the past (when Chateauneuf growers had to be restrained from mislabeling their wine as Lirac to improve sales in Paris). Today Christophe’s daughter, Ambre, keeps the winery on it’s organic/biodynamic, low-oak, nicely restrained path.
For You If: You like southern Rhone reds (this is a terrific one!); you want something big and stylish to pair with rich food, but don’t want the power and price point of Chateauneuf; you like fruit-filled California reds and want to try something new.
Not For You If: You’re after something light, fresh, and lower in alcohol (because that’s not what Lirac does!). You’re strongly adverse to “earthy” in your wines (because there’s a touch of that here).
"Equal parts Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah, the 2021 Lirac La Reine des Bois adds a bit of dried spices to the raspberry and blueberry fruit. Just 15% of the volume aged in second-use oak, the rest was in tank. Medium to full-bodied, with silky tannins and ample length, this is a huge success for the vintage."
"Blackberries, dark berries, dried thyme and sweet spices on the nose follow through to a medium body with fine tannins. Round, fruity and juicy with a transparent character. Precise and well-balanced with a flavorful finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold."
