Frank Faugier is number 1 on my, "Winemakers I wish I could get into the shop for you to meet" list. He's a little charismatic, definitely funny, and not terribly serious about anything other than making truly terrific Syrah in Crozes-Hermitage. He worked for Mars in Lyon for a while before coming back to his family's vineyards in 2003 and starting to bottle and sell wine from the family's grapes. And help show that Crozes-Hermitage can be really, really, good.
"A lovely compellingly nose, with liquorice, cedar, sandalwood and Provençal herbs. Plenty of fruit, seamlessly smooth on the palate, this is really intense, driving, focused and with impressive length. Eighty-year-old vines grown on Le Chassis, hand-harvested, aged for 12 months in recent or new (15%) demi-muids."
"Vibrant, mineral- and spice-accented red and blue fruits and fresh flowers are showcased on the incisive nose. Very fresh and focused on the palate, offering juicy boysenberry and raspberry flavors and a spicy touch of white pepper. The floral and spice notes recur on a long silky finish that is given gentle grip by fine-grained tannins. Imagine a Pinot Noir made in the region, and you will understand this note."
