Organic/Bio Tannat in the mountain vineyards of Madiran are typically inky, tannic, beasts. Christine Dupuy is doing something different with these own-rooted, very old, vines. There’s plenty of inky black color and deep, dark, black cherry and blackberry fruit and lots of firm and grainy tannin. But the tannins are really ripe – what we call “sweet” – and melt away quickly leaving juicy fruit and dark floral flavors lingering. Terrific cookout red.
For You If: You’re looking for a gutsy cookout red that doesn’t turn sweet or heavy; you like to feel some grip in your reds but don’t want to have to down a glass of water after every sip to keep your mouth from turning dry.
Not For You If: You’re after “smooth” – although dangerously easy to drink, this is zesty and grippy/grainy on the finish.
