766 bottles (63 cases) made. “Quasi Centenaria” roughly translates to “about 100 years old,” a reference to this gnarly old Carignan vineyard planted right around 1919. The vines grow on two steep, rock-covered, slopes, one facing north and the other south, located in the heart of Priorat. Given the age of the vines, the lack of water, extreme heat, and absence of nutrients in the soil, these vines struggle to give 300 grams of fruit per bush – enough for about two-thirds of a bottle per vine.
During Silvia’s visit last year, we poured a vertical of Quasi Centenaria for a small group of fans, and tasting multiple vintages – including a few that were at least on the runway to “ready” – drove pretty historic sales. Which meant we sold out of multiple vintages, because there’s not much to go around of this black as night, deep as the sea, and wildly powerful wine. I’ll use last year’s note here, although the 2018 is even better.
It's Lebron James in a Tom Ford tuxedo - massive and powerful, for sure, but handsome, stylish, ready to explode but in control, and undeniably rich. A nuclear bomb with laser focus. Mohamad Ali in his prime, graceful, muscular, ready to charm with a sly rhyme but a little dangerous and primed to explode. Fun to taste now, best from 2025, delivering excitement for 15 years. Oh, and Silvia gave us six magnums, too.
