Organic/Bio Sisters Caroline and Veronique Maret keep their family Chateauneuf du Pape estate anchored firmly in tradition while bringing the quality of farming and winemaking up the best modern standards. This is stylish, made from a 60/40 blend of Grenache and Syrah and aged in large oak casks. Dark, dark, black raspberry and plum fruit, peppery herb, and plenty of palate-clensing grip here with remarkable elegance. Less mineral than Gigondas and more drinkable than Chateaueuf and ready now through 2030.
For You If: You love a big dose of garrigue (olive, rosemary, thyme, lavender) with your super-ripe black berried Rhone Valley fruit; you want the tannins and volume to pair up with lamb or stews; Vacqueyras is your Rhone Valley jam.
Not For You If: You’re looking for delicacy and restraint – this is big and full-throttle, although still poised and drinkable; you prefer to taste oak; you don’t drink higher abv wines.
