Sometimes you taste a wine and just go, “Huh – didn’t see that coming.” Like here. The last word we ever expected to write about Temparnillo from scorching hot/bitter cold/high-altitude Toro Spain was “fresh.” And yet there’s plenty of freshness – almost shocking freshness – here to go with Toro’s typical masses of ripe blackberry/raspberry fruit, flesh, bold tannins and layer of American oak spice. With air some tobacco and more dark raspberry fruit comes up and the wine gets broader and more assertive on your palate. But from first to last it’s terrifically drinkable and…well, fresh! A delightful value.
"The color of blueberry preserves, this wine offers a bouquet of blackberry, coffee bean and dried thyme. Coffee transitions to the palate as well, joined by cassis, purple plum, black olive paste, orange zest and cocoa butter flavors, wrapped in a cocoon of velvety tannins that drift into a lasting mocha-scented finish."
