Having sold his family architecture/construction firm in 2005, Martin Doerschlag took a few years off to wander as a flaneur. Taking inspiration from 19th century French artist Charles Baudelaire, he sought to move slowly, immerse himself in the world around him, notice and appreciate his experiences. And when he landed in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, he brought the take your time, notice and appreciate approach to growing and making Pinot Noir!
This is Flaneur’s “regional” cuvee from both estate and non-estate vineyards and it’s very, very, well done. Like any good Willamette Valley Pinot, it’s pretty and elegant, loaded with dark black fruit that’s lifted by a big burst of spice and sustained by pure acids and fine-grained tannins. What’s less expected is the almost plush texture in the middle balanced by a snap of crunchy cranberry on the finish. There’s more than enough body and concentration here to join in the sweet/savory/earthy flavors of Thanksgiving dinner. And enough quality and interest to keep you coming back long after the turkey has all gone into soup and sandwiches! All at a great value price. Stock up!
"Aromas of candied strawberries, ripe cherries, cocoa and spice. Medium-bodied with creamy tannins and a mellow fruit character. Supple and smooth with hints of bitter orange at the end."
"The 2022 Pinot Noir Willamette Valley is rich in the glass, with a whiff of violets and lavender giving way to crushed raspberries and peppery rose tones. This is juicy and round with crisp wild berry fruits and tantalizing acidity that pinches at the cheeks. It finishes with a tart concentration and cranberry crunchiness, leaving edgy tannins that resonate."
