Craipillot is a small, 2.75HA, premier cru at the foot of much more famous Clos Saint-Jacques. It's a site that tends to give wines with more fruit and less firm structure than its neighbors, although here that's balanced by the intensity and very low yields of Seguin's 90+ year-old vines. It’s dark and dusky on the nose with rich earth and iron shaving scents mingling with the intense fruit. Full, not heavy, on the palate, there’s huge intensity to the black cherry, smoke and iron ore flavors with a crunchy cranberry note giving lift to the firm, polished, finish. Remarkably fresh for the richness, this is fun to taste now and best from 2027-2042.
For You If: You’re after the power and intensity of 1er Cru Gevrey at a remarkably low price; you enjoy Burgundy that delivers both intense, ripe, fruit and earthy, mineral, complexity.
Not For You If: You’re after the soft, easy, feel of New World Pinot or you want generous doses of new oak – the wood here is subtle and will vanish with time.
