On the lower slopes south of Beaune, Greves gives muscular, sometimes grippy, Pinot Noir with a distinct mineral edge – perhaps all that broken limestone gravel that gives the site its name is at work. Pascal Maillard works a small plot that gives around 800 cases of wine per year, picking by hand, sorting carefully, and then fermenting for 15 days with around 50% whole clusters and aging the wine 18 months in 40% new French oak.
In 2022, the fruit is to the fore, starting with big aromas of juice-dripping Bing cherries with a hint of ground dark-roast coffee, cherry blossom, and a touch of dark chocolate. In the mouth the fruit is so ripe, round and succulent that you almost miss the serious structure down underneath – super fine tannin and crushed gravel minerality – and the smoke/ember savory elements that come out on the long, ripe-fruited, finish. It’s deliciously seductive for the ripe fruit now but with air or cellar time, the power and savory side will come forward.
For You If: You’re looking for a Burgundy Pinot Noir that impresses right out of the gate and will develop loads of earthy complexity with time.
Not For You If: You want austere or delicate Burgundy – this is going to get more structured/firm, but it will always be both silky and powerful.
