This COULD be “Rioja.” But Goros decided to stop using the Rioja name on their Rioja-grown Tempranillo to give more flexibility on oak aging. Here they emphasize the grape’s juicy cherry and red berry fruit and the earthy undertones ripe Tempranillo always gives. Six months in used French oak adds just a hint of spice and smooths things out nicely. A fun solo sipper, cookout partner and party red with just one notch of extra class.
For You If: You like the flavors and textures of ripe Tempranillo without the sometimes heavy wood treatment Rioja often displays; you’re looking for a change from Cotes du Rhone or Southern Italian reds – this has that kind of fruit but with a very Spanish twist.
Not For You If: You want to taste the strong smoke, vanilla and herb flavors common in traditional, American oak-aged, Rioja – this is more about the fruit, less about the wood.
