No, it's not a "La La" (if you care about that!) but this is one of the finest introductions to the joys of Cote Rotie we know of. The style here is to bring forward the fruit and deliver more flesh than you'll often find in Cote Rotie Syrah, but with no loss of the smoke, earth and mineral character that make Northern Rhone Syrah so compelling. This is worth a 2 hour decant right now - air it out! - and will sail on in cellar for 20 years. For rich food that wants a savory and intenst - but not austere - companion.
For You If: You're making the transition from the finest American Syrah to the Northern Rhone - the extra slug of fruit and richness here makes it easier to get into Cote Rotie's more savory elements.
Not For You If: You're after the fruit-foward exuberence of Aussi Shiraz or want Cote Rotie's more lean/tart expression - that's not what Guigal does.
"In spite of the dark forest berry fruit this has so much floral and mineral freshness, it is uplifting! Concentrated and very focused, the interplay of oak, fine fruit tannin and fruit aromas on the palate are spot on. Just bottled, so it really benefits from some air in the glass or decanting. A cuvee of 96% syrah and 4% viognier. Matured in 50% new oak and 50% used barrels for three years. Drinkable now, but best from 2024."
