Closer to the Grand Cru hill of Corton than Chorey and sharing some of Corton’s lower slopes, Aloxe-Corton gives a darker, more structured and powerful Pinot Noir with excellent complexity and aging potential. The farming and winemaking here are largely identical to Beaune Greves, including careful sorting, whole-cluster fermentation and 18 months aging in French oak (although 50% new here). But the 80 year-old vines add an extra level of intensity, power and cellar potential.
Tasting them side by side, the difference between Pascal's two 1er Cru reds is always striking. Where Beaune Greves is black fruited, meaty, muscular, the Aloxe Corton 1er Petits Lolieres is always more red fruited, floral and silky, so much so that it's easy to overlook the power of the broad, long, finish. The 2020 has even more richness to the baked and fresh raspberry fruit than usual and more firmly clinching grip. This is fun today and really crying out for a lean steak and/or 3-4 years in cellar and enjoyment through 2035.
For You If: You prefer your Burgundy red fruited and elegant; you enjoy floral notes mixed in with the fruit; you’re up for giving a wine time in decanter or cellar to show its very best.
Not For You If: You’re looking for “savory” character – that’s what the Beaune Greves is for!; you like your Pinot smooth and easy – this closes with firm mineral grip.
