Even though it’s one of the larger villages of the Cote d’Or (only Meursault, Gevrey and Beaune give more wine), Sauvigny-les-Beaune is easy to overlook. The south-facing slopes make it fairly easy to get good ripeness and the plenitude of juice makes it, as Clive Coates wrote years ago, “a happy hunting ground those who seek good, inexpensive, Burgundy.” And at Domaine Maillard with a bit of extra care, hand harvesting, gentle extraction of color and tannin and 15 months in mostly used wood, it can be VERY good, inexpensive, Burgundy indeed.
"Sappy" is a word I always associate with SLB, and you'll get some of that on the nose here to go with the dark black cherry, underbrush and wood smoke aromas. On the palate the fruit is pure and fresh while staying dark at first before a twist of cranberry comes up to add a bit of something red/tart to the mix. This has taken on a good bit of flesh since it first landed a month ago and gained noticeable palate length. The tannins are very fine and lightly chalky, giving just right support to the black and red cherry and floral finish. Delicious right now and over the next 8 years or so with pretty much any Pinot-friendly food.
For You If: You love or want to get to know “real’ red Burgundy at a more real world price; you’re looking for Burgundy to drink tonight with roast chicken, pork with dried fruit, steak; “juicy” Pinot Noir sounds like your kind of jam.
Not for You If: You’re looking for Pinot Noir with California-levels of density/thickness; “mouthwatering” doesn’t sound good to you.
