Frenchman Luc Morlet started in the US wine scene at winemaker at Peter Michael for a half-dozen years. Today his brother makes the wines, although Luc continues to consult on winemaking and final blends. Meanwhile he focuses on his on Morlet Family Vineyards. As at Peter Michael, both his Chardonnays and Cabernets regularly top the "best of" lists for North Coast wines. And he releases his wines a bit later than most, when they are actually ready to start enjoying.
As you'll see from the reviews below, the 2018 Cabernet Mon Chevalier is a stunner. It's from the southern slopes of Knights Valley, just a mile or two north of Napa's Calistoga. Knights Valley always gives plenty of ripeness, but it takes a deft hand in growing and making Cabernet here to keep the tannins from dominating. Luc accomplishes that through fermenting cool and easy in tank and puncheons, aging the wine 16 months in mostly new French oak, and then allowing the wine to come together in bottle before bringing it to market.
"The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Mon Chevalier comes from the Knights Valley, just north of Napa Valley in the larger Sonoma County, and it always seems to me to have one foot in Napa and one foot in Sonoma. Boasting a similar ruby/purple color (as do all of the releases here), it’s slightly more reserved and stately (knightly, if you will), with building aromas and flavors of blackcurrants, toasted bread, dried violets, baking spices, and loamy earth. These carry to a pure, full-bodied, multi-dimensional Cabernet that’s flawlessly balanced, has ripe yet certainly present tannins, a notable sense of minerality, and a great, great finish. It’s just another incredible wine from Luc Morlet that can be drunk today with ample pleasure or cellared for 20-30 years if, for some reason, you feel the need to delay gratification."
