Organic/Bio Blind I’d have guessed this was high-elevation Grenache – and it is! From Sara Pérez and René Barbier, founders of Priorat’s Clos Mogador and Clos Martinet, this is from vines in the Montsant village of La Figuera and made in the old co-op from organic grapes and native yeasts with a short fermentation and aging in concrete. It’s intense on the nose, with scents of beef blood, crushed raspberries and wild flowers jumping from the glass. While it’s broad and full of fruit on the palate, the intense minerality is what you notice most, giving the flavors a firm squeeze to keep them going through a long finish. Wonderfully fresh and drinkable, this will be astonishingly good with any dish that’s a bit earthy or loaded with herbs. As Wine Advocate wraps up the 91 point review, “This is very easy to drink, a lighter and very approachable style of Montsant, closer to Gredos than Châteauneuf.”
For You If: You're a fan of the rich red fruit of Grenache but love it most when it flows across, rather than weights down, your palate and matched by vivid minerality; you're looking for something to enjoy with a really herby mushroom or lentil dish or beef tenderloin coated in pepper and herbs.
Not For You If: You're after the fleshy feel of most Southern Rhone Grenache or the super-ripe, almost candied, fruit of most Spanish Garnacha - this is doing something different.
