Organic/Bio You may have thought you wanted to drink a Bolgheri “super-Tuscan,” but somehow what you’re really after was made a few hours drive further up the Italian coast. I have no idea what tempted someone to plant Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in the land of Barolo, but picked nicely ripe, fermented warm for extraction, and aged in one-third new French oak, this works! You’ll find the dark black currant and plum fruit you’d expect from this blend along with the sweet spice and mocha notes new oak gives. The juicy lift, though, is distinctly Piemonte. A great steak/lamb chop wine and fun alternative to Napa Cabernet, Bordeaux and, of course, super-Tuscan reds!
For You If: You normally drink Napa Cab or richer Bordeaux or high-end Bolgheri super-Tuscans and want to stay in that style, but with a bit of extra lift.
Not For You If: You’re after the traditional flavors of Piemonte – this is something else entirely!
