Organic/Bio Gregorio Dell’Adami de Tarczal retired from the life of multinational marketing executive in 1988 and purchased the Il Civettaio farm to get closer to the land. It’s located in Tuscany Maremma district, a newish DOC where both Tuscany’s traditional Sangiovese grape and the Bordeaux varietals favored in nearby Bolgheri thrive. As soon as he arrived, he converted his three vineyards to organic farming and began an ongoing conversion of the entire property – including his 8 guest rooms – to solar power and sustainable operations.
This is Gregorio’s Super-Tuscan red, named for the al Commissario vineyard where most of the Cabernet comes from (the name means “police officer,” a nod to Maremma’s history as a land of bandits). It’s a blend of Sangiovese (60%), Cabernet Sauvignon (20%) and Merlot (20%) that’s hand-harvested, carefully sorted, and fermented and aged in a mixture of tank and traditional Slavonian oak. Lots of blackberry, black raspberry and sweet cherry aromas and flavors take center stage with hints of herb, leather, licorice and spice peeking out from underneath. A terrific value and very yummy wine.
For You If: You like big, fruit-filled, wines that also have a touch of non-fruit complexity; you’re looking for a red with enough zip to handle red sauce or lasagna but that stays smooth enough for party sipping; you’re just feeling “super”!
Not For You If: You’re after the Napa-meets-Bordeaux vibe that Cabernet-dominant Bolgheri wines give; you want something oaky, extracted and serious – this is more supple and fun.
