Organic/Bio With San Lorenzo, one of Terre Nere’s three "Grande Terroir Ellittico" wines, so designated because of their very rare and pure volcanic sand soils from the Ellittico eruptions dating from 15,000 to 60,000 years ago. Here the soils is completely covered in lava rocks – from pebbles to fist-sized – the need to be piled aside to plant new vines. At 600-700 meters elevation, this is smack in the middle of the Cru zone and delivers a wine that De Grazia says “is perhaps the most complete: just as a wide-angle lens includes the widest panorama, so our Calderara seems to contain and exhibit the widest spectrum of flavors, aromas and nuances.”

"The 2022 Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana is intense and spicy in the glass. Crushed ashen stones and grilled herbs give way to dried black cherries and spiced orange peels. Luxuriously smooth up front, this finds a lovely lift through a core of tantalizing acidity as saline minerals and the onset of grippy tannins firm up its ripe wild berry fruits. This tapers off with tremendous length and concentration, leaving a youthfully structured feel and a pleasantly tart sensation that lingers on and on. The 2022 mixes generosity with power in a beautifully balanced package that will promote over a decade of cellaring."
