Lower ABV Just 13 miles inland from the Pacific, The Hilt’s Chardonnay vineyards benefit from hours of daily sun balanced by almost as many hours of cooling ocean breeze. In 2020, it’s brilliantly aromatic and detailed on the palate, with complex notes of pie crust, lemon peel, tart apricot and more. As the wine warms and opens, hints of beeswax and oak spice emerge, but the wine stays vivid and full of tension from first to last.
For You If: You’re after California Chardonnay aromas and flavors with lots of mouthwatering acidity and just 13.0% alcohol; you’d like to try cellaring California Chard – this will be even better in 3-5 years as a bit of nutty richness joins the party.
Not For You If: You’re after “full-throttle” California Chardonnay, redolent of oak, butter, and tropical fruit – this is leaner and more vibrant than that.
"Aromas of pie crust dough, lightly cooked apple and white peach. Dried flower. Flinty. Mineral. Medium-bodied with creamy texture and citrusy at the end."
"The 2020 Chardonnay Estate is bright, tense and sizzling with energy. Lemon peel, mint, white pepper and a gentle touch of new oak inform this gorgeous Chardonnay from The Hilt. There is plenty of tension, but more depth and therefore better balance, than in the 2019."
