Organic/Bio As Vinous says, 2018 in Tuscany was "a grower's year," meaning the conditions were right for terrific wine given hard and continuous work in the vineyard. Which is what the team at Tolaini is all about, matching organic farming principles with good, old-fashioned, hours of work among the vines. Which produced a legit and excellent 100% varietal Cabernet Sauvignon. With no Merlot or Sangiovse blended in, it honors jazz great Thelonious Monk who once said, “What you don't play can be more important than what you do.” The label is from the album cover of Monk’s legendary live performance in Milan in 1961.
As with the past two Wine Spectator Top 100 editions (#26 for 2013; #13 for 2016), this delivers a stunning blend of Tuscan energy and Napa Valley Cabernet plushness. You can tell immediately it's 100% Cabernet from the dark blackcurrant, blackberry and dark cherry fruit and accents of sweet spice and cured tobacco. The Tuscan soil and sun add a touch of iron-ore minerality and vivid freshness, deftly balanced by a touch of Napa-like velvet in the texture and firm, refined, tannins at the close. Decant and enjoy with grilled lamb or beef now and let it grow and mellow in cellar to pair with anything deeply flavored by roasting or braising.
"Well-defined black cherry and blackberry flavors are shaded by notes of rosemary, eucalyptus, iron and tobacco in this firm and complex red, which shows lovely balance and grip on the lingering aftertaste. Best from 2023 through 2036."
