From the more “modern” winery of La Rioja Alta, one of the most old-school Rioja houses under their own label. Here Tempranillo gets spiced up with 6% Mazuelo, Garnacha and even white Viura and then aged in French oak. There’s a lovely creamy feeling to the wine with dark red fruit depth and lots of “detail” – you can taste lots of individual things. A bit of a velvet feel shows with air and fine grip has this ready to drink with rich food. Impressive.
For You If: You enjoy the plushness of Napa Cabernet and want to try some different flavors and a little less intense structure; you enjoy the flavor of Tempranillo with an accent of oak (rather than the other way around).
Not For You If: You like your Rioja old, leafy and tart – this shows terrific fresh and ripe fruit; you really don’t like oak flavors in your reds – it’s well done here, but definitely present.
"I found a very complete 2015 Finca Martelo that followed the style and the quality path of the previous vintages. The release of this wine was an important milestone for Torre de Oña, where they look for the typicity of Rioja Alavesa through a blend of old-vine Tempranillo with 6% other varieties (Mazuelo, Garnacha and even white Viura). 2015 was a healthy harvest, and the wine shows a nice combination of power and elegance. It's clean and modern but with a traditional twist, some developed aromas and very fine chalky tannins from the limestone-rich soils."
