The reds from Tuscany’s coastal Bolgheri set the standard for “super-Tuscan” wines based on Bordeaux grapes like Cabernet and Merlot in terms of both quality and price. Just a bit further south, in Maremma, though, you can get most of that quality for a lot less money. Like here in this very well-done blend of Sangiovese (50%), Merlot and Cabernet aged in large oak casks. Ripe black cherry fruit, spice, nice richness and a just right amount of Italian mouthwatering zing on the end. A lot of wine for the very modest price.
For You If: Just because you don’t want to spend a lot of money doesn’t mean you don’t want a whole lot of wine; you’re looking for a pizza/pasta red that can handle burgers and steaks, too; you want Tuscan style without the often very firm tannins and leather notes of 100% Sangiovese.
Not For You If: You want to taste those Bordeaux grape flavors – you’ll find hints here, but mainly this is Sangiovese’s flavor show; you the darker fruit power of value Italian reds from the south – this is more balanced and medium-bodied than that.
