Before the 2019 growing season, friends of Jen Williams and Mark Porembski recommended them to the owners of Rafael Vineyard – a super-steep site on the western side of Oak Knoll running up the Mayacamas Mountains’ foothills. Zeitgeist got a small block that juts out into the Valley, just enough to make two barrels of super-intense Cabernet from the low-yielding, 40 year-old, vines. Closer to the Bay than the rest of Napa’s Cabernet sites, this has Oak Knoll’s elegance and finesse on top of the intense flavors and textures of old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon. Just 36 bottles available.
For You If: You want super silky Napa Cab – there’s plenty of structure here and loads of fruit, but it’s all just effortless.
Not For You: If you like to chew your wine – which is not a bad thing, but not what’s going on here.
"The micro-production (50 cases) of the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Rafael Vineyard, which comes from a site at the base of Mount Veeder in the Oak Knoll District. One of the two barrels used was new, but the oak impact is minimal, submerged under a tidal wave of black cherries, tinged with delicate suggestions of sage and bay leaf. Full-bodied, this bottling is denser and more concentrated than the Sleeping Lady, yet it's still balanced, with a rich, velvety and long, long finish."
"From a new site for this team, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Rafael Vineyard comes from old vines in the Oak Knoll region of the Valley that spent 20 months in 50% new oak. It has an old school, structured vibe as well as beautiful notes of darker fruits, black tea, graphite, and roasted coffee. It's concentrated, has a layered, mouth-filling texture, building tannins, and a great finish. Give this medium to full-bodied effort 2-4 years, if not a tad longer, and enjoy over the following two decades."
