Organic/Bio Antoine Chevalier is creating magic in the long-forgotten Champagne region of Coteaux Vitryats. Organic farming, base wine made in barrel and sandstone with 10 months on the fine lees and then 36 months in bottle before disgorgement create texture and balance to his wine’s intense minerality and tiny, 0.8 g/l dosage.
Vintage 2019 was tiny (frost) but gave grapes of terrific freshness and purity, which Antoine captured nicely. Aromas of crunchy pear, pastry crust and white and yellow citrus really jump from the glass. The tiny bubbles give lift to a bracingly minerally textured palate and flavors of crisp orchard fruits, citrus, spice and pie crust. The finish is long, pure, and chalky with a bit of white pepper adding to the complexity. As Galloni said of the 2020 version (the first he tasted, “it has a ton to offer. What a gorgeous and fascinating Champagne.”
For You If: You love purity, intensity and minerality in your Champagne along with a just-right touch of pie crust and spice; you want “Brut Nature” levels of dosage without harshness or austerity.
Not For You If: You’re looking for broad, rich, Champagne – this is balanced and not at all harsh but intensely focused and cut.
