Lower ABV It was only after the Cowley family purchased their 65 acre vineyard in 1998 that they discovered that it had been the site of the first vinifera grape plantings in all of New Zealand. There's even a tiny winery cellar remaining on the property from 1873. The rolling hills with clay/loess soils lower and hillsides dotted with greywacke rock, a fractured sandstone, are certainly a perfect place to grow Pinot Noir and this Sauvignon Blanc. Like this super snappy, crisp and driving example.
As Wine Adocate says in their 93 point review, "The 2022 Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc is concentrated, powerful and densely packed with flavor and acid. The wine is classy and robust with layers of lemongrass, tatami mat, yuzu, kiwi fruit, hints of passionfruit and leafy green herbs. It’s a really smart wine from a wonderfully detail-oriented producer in the Southern Valleys. Highly recommended."
For You If: You like your Sauvignon Blanc to really crackle with flavor and energy and to finish with a firm, crisp, bite.
Not For You If: You're looking for the more mellow and mineral feel of Sancerre - this is bracingly sharp.
