There aren’t a lot of “great” California Pinot Noirs at this price point; this is one of them. From a vineyard at the foot of the Santa Cruz Mountains first planted in 1910 and then replanted with cuttings from Calera, this is delicious and transparent with intense richness of cherry fruit and a supple, chalky, texture. Deep and rich with perfectly balancing minerality and a long, long, finish, it’s just brilliant.
For You If: You want to taste the depth of fruit California sunshine brings to Pinot Noir married to the minerality and finesse found in great Burgundies; you like spending around half what a wine is worth.
Not For You If: You want the thicker, fleshier, texture found in most more commercial California Pinots or the quivering nerve of something from a super-cool site – this is somewhere in between with a lean towards freshness.
