Organic/Bio Until recently, Comando G’s Fernando Garcia’s day job was running this very high-quality estate in Spain’s Sierra de Gredos, one of the most exciting regions for Grenache-based reds in the world today. This is their "village" wine, blending fruit from four sites of different elevation and exposure. It's 100% whole cluster fermented and then ages 8 months in old barrel and 2 more years in tank and bottle. The wine's name refers to the first documented owner of their main vineyards. Maravedies are an ancient currency used in Castilla and records show that Don Alvaro de Luna purchased the not yet planted land from a local monetary in the late 1300s for 30,000 Maravedies.
Like all the best Gredos Garnacha, this is a captivating blend of purity and freshness on one side and rich Garnacha fruit and texture on the other. James Suckling describes it well in his 93 piont write up, "Fresh, ripe raspberries, strawberries and pomegranate fruit with ripe stems and white pepper. Fruity on the palate but also tense with a chalky wrap of tannins."
For You If: You love the flavors and power of Grenache and want that in a highly drinkable, mineral, style; you're looking for a great match for lamb or any dish laced with garlic, rosemary, thyme and/or lavender.
Not For You If: You're after the super-broad texture of most Southern Rhone Grenache or simple sweet fruit of many Spanish Garnachas - this is defined, focused and matches ripe fruit with herbal savory notes and a fine, chalky, grip.
