Organic/Bio Pablo Calatayud went to wine school and returned home in the late 1990s for one reason: to prove his home town of Clariano in the southwestern corner of Valencia could produce great wine. After starting off on the wrong foot (planting Tempranillo, Cabernet and Merlot), he turned to a French grape that has made its best home in Spain - Garnacha Tintorera (aka Alicante Bouchet) and Valencia's native Mando. He also abandoned stainless steel and French oak for the earthenware jars found in the ancient cellar he purchased in 2006.
This blend of 50% Mandó, 30% Arcos and 20% Garnacha Tintorera bursts at the seams with juicy raspberry fruit with a lift of sweet berry leaf that coats your palate and finishes long and satisfying at 13.5% alcohol. As Wine Advocate says in the 92+ point review, it shows "good freshness with brightness and pretty notes, perfumed and fresh. It's elegant, with finesse, and has much more elegant tannins. It's more serious, less rustic."
For You If: You like light, fresh, wines with juicy fruit - think Beaujolais, Valpolicella and cool climate Pinot Noir; you want to taste the exciting, fresh, wines Spanish winemakers are coaxing from hot climates!
Not For You If: You're looking for super-ripe fruit or lots of oak - this is snappy fresh and made all in big clay amphorae.

"The 2022 Vermell was produced with 50% Mandó, 30% Arcos and 20% Garnacha Tintorera, a very different blend from the 2020 I had tasted last time, with a lot less Garnacha Tintorera, turning more into a small brother of the Safrà and Parotet. It's a light red with 13.5% alcohol, a medium body and good freshness with brightness and pretty notes, perfumed and fresh. It's elegant, with finesse, and has much more elegant tannins. It's more serious, less rustic."
