Organic/Bio Whether you’re dipping your toes into the “Natural Wine” pond or just after a delicious, classically styled and satisfying bottle of Bordeaux, the 2019 Les Helices is a terrific wine and outstanding value. Fourth generation Blaye winemaker Damien Larteau took over his family’s vines in 2010 after earning his degree at the University of Bordeaux and working with Olivier Leflaive in Burgundy and Goerges Vernay in Condrieu and Cote Rotie. Converting farming to organics and increasing vine density to 7,000 plants per hectare gives him wonderfully ripe fruit. Fermenting with native yeasts, moving his wine by gravity, using no new oak and strictly limiting sulfur use lets that fruit shine in your glass naturally.
Soils in the Cotes Bordeaux Blaye village of Reignac are very similar to Saint Estephe just across the Gironde River, and there’s a bit of that muscular power here as well. It’s equal parts Cabernet and Merlot, given 35 days on the skins without pumpovers, and aged mainly in barrel with 10-15% done in cement. The aromas and flavors of blackcurrant and blackberry gain complexity from subtle accents of crushed violets, cured tobacco, cedar and Bordeaux’s distinctive graphite/lead pencil note. The blend of purity, power and freshness is pretty intoxicating whether you’re enjoying it tonight or over the next decade.
For You If: You want to enjoy a natural wine that tastes like where it’s from vs of dirt and funk; you don’t give a fig about natural wine and just want to drink a terrific and traditionally-styled Bordeaux at a very good price.
Not For You If: You’re after the super-rich/sweet fruit so many modern Bordeaux show in these extra-hot and dry growing seasons; you want lots of intense grip and drying tannins – this is silky and easy.
