Moulinat is a true family estate in Entre Deux Mers, currently run by the 5th generation of the Sage family who have owned the property since the early 1800s. The vineyard is first rate, with calcareous limestone soils leavened by gravel and sand for excellent drainage. The vines average 25 years old (with some 45 years of age), giving deep roots and naturally moderate yields necessary for excellent ripeness and flavor. Like most Right Bank wines, it’s mainly Merlot (about 60%) for plump, generous, fruitiness. But almost 40% of the wine is Cabernet Sauvignon, giving this “little wine” raised all in tank an extra gear of structure and refinement to go with the ample blackcurrant and black cherry fruit.
Wonderfully aromatic, this delivers plenty of generous and complex flavors, with a truly luxurious mouthfeel with excellent richness and density. It’s hard to resist for the blackberry and currant fruit and accents of dark chocolate, cedar and tobacco now. And that very classic Bordeaux “lead pencil” graphite minerality will just strengthen as this develops nicely over the next five years.
For You If: You love the food-friendly flavors and structure of a good Bordeaux at a very fine everyday price.
Not For You If: You're looking for the flesh/weight of a California red blend or a lot of oaky spice - this is done all in tank so the fresh fruit shines through.
