Thierry Sabon makes old-school wines, ones that emphasize the earthier, meatier, side of the Southern Rhone. Here his Grenache (65%), Syrah, Mouvedre and Cinsault red from the sandy soils of Lirac pumps out plenty of rich black fruit and has the silky tannins that are Lirac’s signature. But the wine is really all about roasted meat and garrigue – a mélange of the black olive, rosemary and thyme that scent the Rhone Valley air when the Mistral blows. Deliciously gutsy.
For You If: You love earthy, gutsy, Rhone reds that aren’t heavy or hot or jammy; you’re looking for the perfect match for lamb cooked any way; the combination of powerful and silky sounds delicious.
Not For You If: You don’t’ want any earthiness in your reds; you’re looking for a light, crisp, red vs a Southern Rhone powerhouse.
