Organic/Bio Lower ABV On the “Right Bank” of Chablis – the same side of the river as the Grand Crus – Mont de Milieu is one of Chablis’s sunniest sites with a due south exposure on it’s bowl-shaped chalk soils. Not surprisingly, the vineyard typically gives wines of more body and richness than most other 1er sites and, in warm years, can flirt with over-ripeness and the exotic. You’ll taste the warm, dry, vintage here and feel it in a wine that’s weightier and more intense than the average Chablis. But the big dose of oyster shell, sea salt and iodine match the fruit and give this outstanding potential in cellar. Delicious now, too, but worth decanting for a half hour to let the fruit fall back and the Chablis character come through.
For You If: You’re intrigued by the idea of “powerful Chablis” with lots of volume to go with classic Chablis grip and minerality; you want to see how a wine evolves for a few years or are willing to give it a decant tonight.
Not For You If: You’re after pop and pour Chablis delight – not that this tastes “bad” on first opening, but there’s so much more to enjoy with a decant or a few years in cellar!
"Outstanding. As is often the case in riper vintages, there is a touch of the exotic lurking in the background of the aromas of white and yellow peach nuanced by hints of citrus confit and oyster shell. There is excellent size, weight and richness to the very generously proportioned and sappy larger-bodied flavors that quickly firm up on the very dry, compact and slightly rustic finale. In contrast to all of the prior wines, this will need at least a few years of cellaring to unwind."
