Organic/Bio Lower ABV The old vines planted by Amandine and Richard’s grandfather handled the tough 2021 season with aplomb. As usual, Montmains is the most open and generous of the Malandes 1er Crus with a touch of pear and yellow apple mid-palate balanced by a juicy, lemon/lime, Granny Smith apple and crushed seashell finish. Like Cote de Lechet, the need to keep barrels filled in a short harvest means that this sees more wood than usual – 80% done in used 500 liter casks and 20% in tank, the exact opposite of a “normal” crop. But the oak is super subtle and takes nothing away from the vivid, mouthwatering, character here.
“TOP VALUE Produced from vines planted in 1963 by André Tremblay. An elegant and precise Montmains which achieves the balance between ripeness of fruit (more white peach here), crisp apple acidity and a fine, lingering mineral finish. A great example of this premier cru which will drink well for many years if carefully cellared.”
“The expressive nose confirms that it could be from nowhere else but Chablis with its aromas iodine, oyster shell and pretty floral scents that are also trimmed in discreet wood influence. Here too the medium-bodied flavors possess very fine volume as the old vine sap is very much in evidence on the bitter lemon rind-inflected and wonderfully long finale.”
