Lower ABV As Burghound says, “If you're unfamiliar with the Thibert wines you owe it to yourself to try one of two examples as the best are excellent.” Here’s the place to start with a wine that draws on vineyards around Fuisse, including some small plots in 1er Cru sites. The vines are old – average of 70+ years – and Christophe nurtures them with organic farming and by working hard to keep copper out of the vineyard soils. Around 20% of the wine ferments and ages in mostly used French oak with the rest staying in steel on the lees (spent yeast cells) for 10 months, just adding to the wine’s richness and texture.
The aromas are lovely with a core of ripe peach and nectarine fruit framed by hints of buttered hazelnut and chalk. The mouthfeel is the perfect balance between a creamy richness and concentration on one side and fine, vigorous, acidity and chalky minerality on the other. The flavors build nicely from front to back and get deeper with air, and the finish is long and really satisfying. This is 100% ready to drink tonight and will improve for another half-dozen years and hold a while after that. So very much worth taking a few home (although the chances are you’ll struggle to wait to drink them all).
For You If: You love Pouilly Fuisse and want one with a bit more serious structure and intensity than most; you’re after a Chardonnay to sip while dinner is in the oven and then enjoy with rich shellfish, dishes with plenty of mushrooms, and roasted birds (like turkey!).
Not For you If: As with the Saint Veran, you’re looking for the lean bite and nerve of really cool-climate Chardonnay or the tropical fruit and flesh of Chard from warmer places – this sits in between.
