If you’ve heard of Banyuls at all, it’s probably from a wine book recommending it as THE wine to pair with chocolate desserts. Which isn’t a bad place to start! It’s from the deep south of France, on the Mediterranean not far from the border with Spain. Here, for centuries, growers have picked super-ripe Grenache, started it fermenting, and then added a dollop of brandy to the skins and juice to stop fermentation, retain sugar, and extract a wild array of flavors and aromas.
This is a blend of three recent vintages aged without oxidization to retain plenty of dark, deep, red fruit flavors. I really should write my own tasting note, but I can’t do better than Marissa Ross in Bon Apetit: “I know bitter milk chocolate isn’t a thing, but that’s what it tastes like, with hints of strawberry, the smoothness of a Stan Getz album, and the warmth of that perfect cup of hot cocoa from The Santa Clause. It has great acidity, and is lighter in body, texture, and alcohol than many other dessert wines. You can drink it alone, or if you want to get really indulgent, pair it with desserts rich in chocolate or ripe berries.”
