Organic/Bio One of the great wines and finest winemakers of Morgon – really, all of Beaujolais. Born in Morgon, Jean-Marc Burgaud created his domaine in 1989 and now holds 18 hectares of high-density, very old (avg = 50 years) vines. Whole clusters are the rule as is aging in cement (except for two special cuvees) and no use of sulfur before a dab after malo is complete. As Wine Advocate has written, his “wines are precise yet utterly delicious. Bravo Jean-Marc, a master of his craft.”
From the finest site in Morgon, his 2023 Cote de Puy is another masterful wine. As Vinous writes in the 93-95 point pre-bottling review, “The 2023 Morgon Grands Cras comes from clayey soils that managed to retain water during the dry stretches of the growing season. This has wonderful delineation on the nose, very lifted and refined with white-tipped strawberry, raspberry and light earthy, almost gravelly scents. The palate is notably well-balanced with a slightly chalky texture on the entry and good backbone, but it's the mineralité from start to finish that makes this cuvée stand out. Superb.”
For You If: You love great Beaujolais – this is one of the best; you love great Burgundy and have a little patience – this wine will improve for 10-15 years, getting more mineral, earthy complex and Burgundy-like as it goes.
Not For You If: You’re a dedicated Gamay-hater even when it’s delivering the perfect balance of richness, texture, vivacity, fruit and purity and is built to enjoy with steak or stew now and to cellar for years; you’re looking for funk – this is clean and pure.
