Tasting for a couple of hours with Kelley can leave one in a bit of a buzzed daze – not because of alcohol (we were spitting, honest!), but because topic after topic comes up, images are evoked and allowed to fade, and very little “traditional” wine talk happens at all. It’s invigorating, but not terribly conducive to nailing down details about how individual wines were made. Which is my excuse for not having a lot more to say about this wine other than “it’s really delicious and you should buy it.”
Kelley has made sizzling fresh Pinot Blanc from the famed Freedom Hill vineyard for a while now, but I believe this is her first red from this important vineyard south of the Eola Hills. It's lovely with intensely deep fruit and saline minerality and finishes very long. As Kelley wrote about it, "It's deeper red than my other Pinots, and both youthful and transparent. I love the hint of violets on the nose carried by red fruits, subtle spices on ocean air. Overall, this wine is deeper than my other bottlings, and the mouth is full of just-ripe blackberries with a hint of salinity and cola. This Freedom Hill is delicious and has a fine focus that continues through the long finish."
"The 2021 Pinot Noir Freedom Hill Vineyard is super-expressive and hits on all cylinders, with electric energy throughout. Aromatically, it’s layered with notes of pine needles, wild cherry, and fresh medicinal herbs, and on the palate, it offers ripe, supple tannins and an outstanding finish. It’s going to have a very wide drinking window over the next 10-15 years."
